The dark elf began his ascent.
Morohtar silently climbed up the watchtower’s
structural supports like a wraith. At the top of the platform, the four
crossbowmen clad in dark green dragonhide armour stood with their heavy weapons
resting against the wooden railing, their attention lazily drifting toward the
churning orange light of the pit below.
They never heard the rogue.
Morohtar vaulted over the railing,
soundless. With terrifying deftness, his hands moved in a blur. His left hand
clamped over the mouth of the first guard while a dagger severed the man's
windpipe. As the first body slumped, Morohtar pivoted, hurling a heavy throwing
knife into the throat of the second. Before the remaining two could even
register the silver flash of his movement, the dark elf was upon them, driving
twin blades through the unarmoured gaps beneath their leather pauldrons. They
dropped dead before hitting the floorboards.
Four elite crossbowmen dismantled
in under ten seconds. Morohtar wiped his blades on a fallen mercenary's cloak
and looked down at the quarry floor, giving a single, sharp whistle that
mimicked the cry of a mountain hawk.
On the high ridge, the vanguard
moved as planned.
Closing on the mess tent and barracks
from above the ledge, Dashiel’s white moustache twitched with pure, unbridled
eccentric excitement. He adjusted his brass goggles over his eyes and cranked
the heavy iron valve on his canvas-wrapped alchemical pack. Thanks to the upgrades
machined by Master Thul in the Nadaran Undercity, the gauge sat perfectly in
the green zone.
"Let’s see how they handle
material reality!" the gnome whispered fiercely.
Dashiel aimed the nozzle of his
flamethrower and squeezed the trigger.
A roaring, blinding wall of
atomized petroleum slurry erupted from the ridge, raining down upon the
encampment. The volatile chemical fire vaporized the air, instantly engulfing
the tents and cutting the lounging infantry off from the centre of the quarry
with an impenetrable wall of white-hot alchemical flame.
Panic shattered the camp. The six
guards maintaining the perimeter around the mages drew their heavy poleaxes and
scimitars, spinning wildly toward the sudden inferno.
That was when the anvil dropped.
Reis has already stepped off the
precipice, sliding down the steep embankment in a controlled avalanche of loose
white rock. The giant knight hit the quarry floor, his heavy iron greaves
cracking the limestone beneath his boots. His sword was already drawn, the steel
catching the violent orange glare of the Amber Mana harvester.
"The line is broken!"
Reis roared, his gravelly bass echoing over the roaring flames.
A massive Dragonhide mercenary
charged him, swinging a mace in a devastating horizontal arc. Reis didn't
flinch. He dropped his centre of gravity, executing a parry, and batted the mace
aside. With his recovery swing, the knight brought the sword around in a
brutal, crushing riposte that clove straight through the mercenary's collar
joint.
At the edge of the pit, the four
mages panicked. Seeing the Knight of the White City dismantling their guard,
the lead mage raised a crude, jagged sliver of raw amber crystal, his veins
turning a dark, orange as he prepared to unleash the Unmaking Fire.
"Shierra, the caster!"
Reis shouted over the din.
From the ridge above, Shierra
stepped into view. Her features were illuminated by the sudden, mesmerizing
violet luminescence of the Antithesis Orb at the crown of her deadwood staff.
She did not pull the Weave into a massive, straining barrier.
Shierra narrowed the aperture of
her mind, letting the chaos of the quarry fade out. Her brilliant emerald eyes
flared with matching violet fire. With a swift, gentle flick of her wrist, she
plucked the geometric lines of the Weave, and imbued it with violet energy from
the staff.
Pft.
A single, needle-thin bolt of
pure, concentrated violet arcane energy shot from her staff with lightning
velocity. It struck the lead mage’s jagged amber crystal mid-cast. The impact
was instantaneous and devastating – as they had witnessed before. The volatile
orange spell inverted, drawing the energy backward into the mage's arms. His
flesh withered instantly into blackened skin and bone, collapsing into a
desiccated husk before he could loose the fire.
The three remaining mages stared
in absolute horror at their fallen leader. Seeing their magic rendered utterly
useless by the half-elf's violet bolts, they broke. Abandoning the massive
harvesting machine and the milky-white quartz crystal tubes, they scrambled
frantically around the pit toward the heavy wooden chest.
"They are trying to secure
the payloads!" Lady Hannah called out from the ridge, tracking the mages'
desperate movements with sharp, calculating precision. Her dark hair whipped in
the thermal updrafts of the fire as she analyzed the trajectory of their
retreat.
"Not today," Reis
grunted. He pivoted on his heel, driving his iron boots into the dust, and
charged directly toward the chest to cut off their escape.
"Morohtar, take the left!"
the Field Marshal bellowed, his gravelly voice shattering the unnatural quiet.
"Dashiel, burn the incline! Move!"
Two Dragonhide infantrymen
dropped from the lower scree to intercept him, their scimitars flashing in the
pale light. A swift parry and riposte dispatched the first man, not match for
the momentum of the charging iron-clad knight. Without breaking stride, Reis
ripped his sword horizontally, the steel shearing through the scale-layered
green leather of the second man's ribs, sending him crashing into the white
dirt.
To the left, a silver blur cut
through the jagged limestone shelves.
Morohtar descended down the watchtower
swiftly with the impossible, weightless agility of the elves. In his right
hand, the three-foot Crimson Sabre hissed as it cut through the cold air.
The second mercenary saw the
descending doom caster and panicked, drawing his mana to strike at the rogue.
"Don't bother,"
Morohtar hissed, his silver eyes flashing with lethal intent. He vaulted over
the head of the mage to close the final distance.
As the caster began the
incantation, the ancient elven enchantment within the Crimson Sabre woke up.
The dwarven-cut rubies along the blood-red guard flared with a deep, hungry
crimson luminescence. The spell didn't just fail - the raw mana bolt was
violently dragged out of the caster's throat and sucked directly into the
sabre's edge. The Crimson Sabre consumed it all, leaving the mage entirely dry
and breathless.
Before the man could even reach
for a dagger, the sabre danced in a swift, blinding arc, slitting the caster's
throat before he could even register the void in his bloodless veins.
Dashiel clambered down near the
other side of the pit, but was met with the remaining mage and infantry. The
intrepid gnome slammed his heavy brass goggles over his eyes. He didn't possess
a lineage to pull the Weave, and he didn't have an ancient enchanted blade. But
he had a metal dragon in his hands.
The gnome primed the pressure
lines. The mechanical cylinders shrieked, a high-pitched hiss of atomized
petroleum rushing through the brass nozzles.
"Let's see your high-born
Academy counter-spells handle this!" Dashiel roared.
He pulled the trigger. As before,
a massive, roaring torrent of liquid, chemical flame erupted from the nozzle,
streaming thirty feet up the steep shale slope.
The remaining Dragonhide
infantrymen and mage raised their shields, and desperately shouting formulas
for thermal wards and defensive hexes. But the brilliant yellow flame didn't
care about the Weave. It washed over their green dragonhide plates in a sticky,
unquenchable wave of fury. The wards broke instantly because there was no magic
to unravel. The camp lines disintegrated into absolute, shrieking chaos as the
mercenaries scrambled to strip off their burning armour, rolling on the ground
in desperation.
The basin of the Chalk Hills
quarry had become a slaughterhouse of white limestone dust and screaming iron.
The surviving Dragonhide infantry reformed their ranks and charged at the vanguard.
At the same time. the two
remaining Dragonhide mages reached the wooden chest. Realizing their
conventional lines were being systematically butchered, they pulled one of the
glowing amber cylinders. They forced their own mana through it, and heaved the
crystal towards the sky. The overloaded crystal cracked in mid-air, unleashing
a howling wave of the pressurized orange Unmaking Fire that rapidly bloomed in
a spectacular sphere.
Shierra was ready.
The brilliant violet orb at its
crest bloomed an expanding violet sphere of its own. The two spheres collided
and the violet energy began annihilating the Unmaking Fire. The amber mana fuelling
it was caught by violet energy tendrils and was drawn directly to the
Antithesis Orb. Violet energy funnelled straight down the reinforced iron bands
of the deadwood shaft. The stolen energy was collected into a pure,
concentrated reservoir of power, and the excess of it was surging directly into
Shierra’s marrow.
Shierra felt her internal
reserves swell to an impossible, staggering limit. Her emerald eyes completely
dissolved into twin pools of radiating violet static. Caught in a deep,
absolute channelling trance, everything around her slowed to a crawl. Through
the white dust, the chaotic strands of the Weave illuminated themselves before
her mind. She can sense the horde of infantry charging towards her.
She didn't try to weave a
massive, unguided wave of force. Instead, Shierra focused her intent on the
microscopic gaps in the mercenaries' defence. Her fingers cut through the cool
air, pulling the natural Weave and combining it with the consumed violet
counter-mana. She wove geometric shapes that materialized in the air. It
hovered above her and grew in violet intensity.
With a deafening, metallic
shriek, she unleashed a devastating barrage of razor-sharp violet energies. The
power didn't manifest as raw blasts, but as dozens of perfectly formed, arcane
violet arrows that flew towards the charging mercenaries. The projectiles moved
with geometric certainty, completely bypassing the tattered green dragonhide
plates and finding their marks flawlessly inside the narrow eye sockets of the
mercenary infantry. By the dozens, the Dragonhide fighters dropped into the
white dirt, neutralized instantly by the silent, targeted void of the
Antithesis.
“We did it! Girl you did-“ Dashiel
could not finish.
A sudden, earth-shaking rumble
cut through the shrieks of the dying mercenaries.
At the rear of the harvesting
site, a massive canvas hangar tent violently ripped open, the thick fabric
tearing away with a scream of parting iron ropes.
From beneath the canvas rose a
towering, terrifying monstrosity of brass and riveted iron - a heavy labour
golem, originally engineered to break limestone boulders and hoist massive
cargo crates, now weaponized for a final stand.
The mechanical behemoth hissed
steam from venting ports, and rose to its full height on four segmented,
crab-like hydraulic legs. Its left arm ended in a massive, whirling circular
saw that screamed as the steel teeth bit into the air, its right arm was a
colossal hydraulic pincer capable of crushing anvil iron.
The few surviving Dragonhide
mercenaries immediately scrambled backward, forming a panicked last stand
behind the brass frame of the machine. Dashiel aggressively cranked the valves
on his pack, sending a prolonged, roaring torrent of bright yellow chemical
fire straight down the shale slope. The blinding yellow combustion washed over
the golem, but the mundane petroleum heat was completely useless against the
thick brass chassis. The machine simply emerged from the yellow glare, its
metallic plates glowing dull red as it zeroed in on Shierra.
Shierra was still transfixed in
the centre of the path, her eyes burning bright violet, completely locked in
the channelling trance.
Reis unclasped his heavy travelling
cloak, letting the fabric drop into the white dirt to grant his shoulders
absolute velocity. Both hands locked onto the long, leather-wrapped grip of his
sword, with renewed resolve.
The twenty-foot golem closed the
distance with terrifying mechanical strides. It hissed, steam venting from its
upper chassis as it lifted its massive right pincer arm high into the air,
bringing it swiftly down to smash the half-elf into the limestone floor.
"Reis!" Morohtar’s
voice cut through the roar of the saw.
The Field Marshal moved with
instantaneous, explosive velocity. With a swift prayer, he willed the Holy
Light from his core in full fury. Reis leapt directly into the path of the
descending brass pincer. His feet slid across the chalk dust, knees slightly
bent, hips locked and his armoured boots digging into the ground into a rigid,
unyielding stance - the Iron Vanguard Stance.
Remembering the dark elf's
instructions from the night's watch, Reis didn't grip the pommel with the rigid
torque of a longsword - he adjusted his lower hand downward by half an inch,
letting the weighted disk pommel act as a true counter-balance.
He willed his internal spark into
the steel. His father's bastard sword erupted with a fierce, blinding
white-gold brilliance. With absolute leverage and perfect torque, Reis swung
upward, meeting the descending mechanical arm in a high vom tag parry.
CLANG.
Everyone felt the impact.
The contact was explosive, and
the shockwave rang through the canyon walls. The sheer kinetic force of the
holy parry completely shattered the hydraulic piston ends of the right arm,
sending the giant golem stumbling backward into the scree, its pincers broken
and useless.
The machine recoiled violently,
its exhaust vanes puffing thick plumes of white steam as it instantly swung its
left arm, bringing the vicious, screaming circular saw horizontally toward
Reis's flank.
"Careful, Reis!"
Morohtar yelled, his silver eyes dilating as he tracked the weapon.
"You're overdriving the core!"
The dark elf could see the
invisible disaster lines vibrating violently through the centre of the knight's
blade - the carbon was separating under the extreme thermal shock of the Holy
Light.
Behind him, Lady Hannah raised
her gold quill. With a sharp geometric sweep, her sapphire Lexical Lattice
snapped into focus over the moving golem, parsing its kinetic matrix and
mechanical weight distribution in a heartbeat. Her calculating eyes darted
across the readings.
"The spine, Reis!"
Hannah shouted, breaking through the chaos. "The structural equilibrium is
balanced on the rear column! Strike the spine!"
Dashiel stood right beside her,
his brass goggles clicking as he verified the internal schematic.
"She's right! Strike the
energy matrix powering the boiler! It's a pressurized steam furnace loaded by a
raw Amber Mana crystal cell!"
Reis didn't hesitate. He willed
the Holy Light to its absolute zenith, demanding the divine spark imbue his
marrow with raw, unyielding strength. The Light instantly answered with a
deafening resonance. Filled with blinding white energy, the knight leapt high
into the air, his boots slamming onto the ruined brass shoulder of the golem's
right arm. He clambered up the riveted chassis to the machine's ‘head’, and
with a roaring, two-handed downward cleave, he sheared the screaming circular
saw arm clean off its mountings.
CLANG.
"Reis!" Morohtar
screamed once more, seeing the steel of the bastard sword turn an unnatural,
blistering white as the heat expansion reached its absolute breaking point.
"Strike its spine!"
Dashiel screamed at the top of his lungs.
The armless brass beast thrashed
violently, swinging its heavy, broken torso around to dislodge the rider. Reis
ducked out of the way of the swinging brass collar, sliding down the machine's
segmented back casing, his boots locking onto the hydraulic joints of the
crab-legs.
Time seemed to slow to an
absolute crawl. The knight whispered a final, quiet prayer into the dust. The
Holy Light flared anew, blinding and absolute, manifesting along the entire
length of the bastard sword in the massive, ghostly image of a radiant Warhammer
- a weapon built purely to crush the foundations of iron.
With a final, earth-shattering
strike, Reis drove the ghostly hammer straight down into the centre of the rear
energy matrix.
CLANG!
The iron casing breached.
Instantly, a violent, high-pressure plume of superheated steam coiled with
toxic orange fire erupted from the golem's spine. Reis leapt out of the way safely
onto the ground. The sheer momentum of the blow toppled the massive mechanical
beast forward, sending its multi-ton brass frame crashing violently into the
last remaining cluster of Dragonhide mercenaries who were trapped against the
quarry wall.
A heartbeat later, the unrefined
Amber Mana cell inside the furnace suffered a catastrophic structural
inversion. The golem erupted in a violent explosion of brilliant orange fire - before
the absolute inversion took hold, violently sucking the flames, the metal
fragments, and the screaming mercenaries backward into a silent, crushing point
of nothingness.
When the dust finally settled,
the quarry basin returned to a dead, echoing quiet. Nothing remained against
the white limestone wall but deep, scorched score marks and the mummified,
blackened husks of seven mercenaries frozen in the dirt.
The brilliant violet static
snapped out of the air. Shierra gasped, her knees buckling as she recovered
from the exhausting channelling trance. Her frame staggered forward, completely
spent, but Morohtar shot out, his twilight-skinned arms catching her firmly
before she could hit the limestone rocks.
To the flank, Reis dropped
heavily to one knee, his breath rattling violently inside his breastplate as
the divine adrenaline began to recede from his veins. He stayed knelt for
several long seconds, using the ground to steady the trembling in his arms.
When the Field Marshal finally
rose, he turned slowly to face his vanguard.
He lifted his right hand to
examine his weapon.
The ancestral blade was entirely
gone. Overdriven past its physical threshold by the fury of the Holy Light, the
steel had shattered perfectly along the stress lines Morohtar had diagnosed by
the fire.
What remained in the knight's
grip was nothing but a jagged, broken metal stump, severed cleanly right after
the forte.
